Los condicionantes medioambientales influyen de manera decisiva en la salud. Por eso, los Gobiernos deben incorporar la relación entre medio ambiente y salud no sólo en las agendas nacionales, sino también en las internacionales.
Bajo esta premisa ha arrancado hoy en Madrid la 6ª Reunión del Consejo Ministerial Europeo de Medio Ambiente y Salud de la región europea de la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS), en cuya inauguración han participado esta mañana el ministro de Sanidad, Servicios Sociales e Igualdad, Alfonso Alonso, y la directora de la Oficina Regional de la OMS, Zsuzsanna Jakab.
En su intervención, Alonso ha abogado por “avanzar en políticas sanitarias que tengan en cuenta los determinantes medioambientales” y, para ello, se les debe otorgar el peso específico y se debe considerar la carga de enfermedad que ocasionan, de acuerdo con la evidencia científica.
Se trata, ha explicado, de avanzar en la identificación de riesgos y amenazas de naturaleza medioambiental para la salud y en el mejor modo de afrontarlos.
El ministro de Sanidad, Servicios Sociales e Igualdad es uno de los ocho integrantes del Consejo Ministerial Europeo de Medio Ambiente y Salud (European Environment and Health Ministerial Board) hasta 2017. El Consejo está integrado por ocho titulares de departamentos de Medio Ambiente y de Salud de ocho países de la región Europea (además de España, Portugal, la Federación Rusa, Croacia, Lituania, Georgia, Armenia, Montenegro, Macedonia).
Además, son miembros del Consejo el Programa Medioambiental de Naciones Unidas, OMS Europa, la Comisión Económica para Europa de Naciones Unidas y la Comisión Europea.
